#1 There is absolutely no exception to this. If a person is able to clear his mind and think back to his childhood he will see that his earliest thoughts of impurity originated from cartoons and other “Harmless” movies. If a person will claim that since he sees this all in the streets, he should know that there is a very large difference between having to walk down the streets for business reasons and watching movies for entertainment. In addition even in the streets a person must be very careful and fully guard his eyes. We could write pages on the severity of defiling the eyes by watching impure movies but that is not the goal of this article. Reason
#2 Now it is well known that the people involved in the creation of movies as well the actors are amongst the lowest and immoral people alive. When a person watches their creation his is taking all of their defilement and actively funneling it into his mind. The imprint causes this person great spiritual damage. It is very obvious that it will place their thoughts of impurity and atheism in your mind. Their worped opinions will also begin influencing your thought process. There are two elements to consider: the first is, when a person reads this he will say “I am different I am strong, it will not effect me”. This is wrong, you are not strong you are very weak, all your energy is coming from the sita acher. The klipot have full control over you and have no reason to fight back, which is why you feel that you have control over your mind. Unless a person is a very big Shomer Habris he will be affected by such things especially if he is actively causing it.
Reson#3 Everyone who watches movies spends a part of the day spacing out about them. Many times they contain impure thoughts which are a grave sin, especially if you actively caused them to by having watched movies in the past. In addition it wastes a huge part of the day and a person losses his ability to concentrate. If a person would even one time have his Amida Prayer disrupted by a space out session from one of the movies he watched. That in itself would be a reason to never watch another movie ever again. This is especially true if it happens three times a day. Reason #4 Even though most people consider themselves very sophisticated their mind is actually very congested. By watching movies they are exposed to a lot of useless information that continues to clog up their brain. Instead of awareness and knowledge a person simply gains confusion. Knowing how the jungle people live in Africa or how inmates act in a jail are two pieces of useless information that will never come in any use and just give you more foreign thoughts floating around your mind. Reason #5 One must also take into consideration that if a person wished to defile himself he would have to move around quite a bit to defile himself in such a verity of ways. Here by just sitting in one place he can achieve a very large verity of impurity without having to travel at all. Reason #6 It is known according to the Holy Kabbalah that spirits of impurity need physical objects to anchor themselves to. This is part of the mystery why people worshiping Avodah Zarah needed physical statues and forms as part of their service. Any person that has a TV, DVD player or movies in his home has hosts of impure spirit clinging to them. The obvious manifestations are the tempers and arguments that control the residents of that house. Reason #7 The klipot and the Sitra Acher are your worst enemies that cause you all your suffering and anguish, now you are going to them for enjoyment. This is comparable to a person who has enemy who he hates with all his being. Now if this person’s enemy was making a party would he go there and enjoy the food? Would he sell out all his opinions and emotions for such a little pleasure? Reason #8 The books of Kabbalah teach that it is very harmful to look at the face of a wicked Rasha. This is because a person who commits sins creates damaging spirits that clings on to his body. When someone looks at this person he is also gazing at all the Klipot that surround him. All the actors in the movies are Reshaim who commit sever sins. It is very harmful to stare at them for hours at end. This is especially true when people begin respecting and idolizing them. Reason #9 One of the commandments in the Torah is “You shall not copy their customs” (Bechukoshem Lo Telaech). Throughout history the Jews never took part in the non-Jewish entertainment in the countries where they lived. Not only does one transgress this by watching movies, he also learns to emulate their dress, society and actions. Reason #10 When a person grows up and hears what the crusades, nazis and communists did to our nation he hates these people with all his heart. As time passes and a person watches movies, the wicked actors and the personalities they play out become his heroes he begins to lose this hate. Soon he reached a place where he becomes totally senseless to such things, maybe even somewhat justifying or “understanding their actions”. This is because it is imposable to hate something you enjoy and receive energy from. In addition a person should be totally submissive to the Holy Tadikim. After being contaminated by movies a person loses all his respect for the Tzadikim and even begins to doubt their teachings and actions. A person should have goals such as learning Torah doing Chesed and Tikkunim and reaching spiritual heights. Movies cause a person to have very misplaced and useless goals. Reason #11 One of the main goals of meditative practices is for a person to gain conscious control over the sub conscious part of his mind. The way movies work is, there is a set of still pictures that is flashed so fast in front of your eyes that it appears that they are moving. Even though the sub conscious mind is well aware that they are still, one manages to fool his conscious mind. In essence he is causing more separation between conscious and sub conscious mind. Reason #12 Reading books at least activates the mind. When one reads comics he has the images supplied and uses less of his mind. When watching movies most of the stimulation is supplied and a person just sits there like a vegetable. Reason #13 Movies portray a very fake image of the world. This causes many people to become disillusioned and it makes them think that they can accomplish things that are not realistically possible. A person becomes very broken or frustrated if he is living in reality but his dreams and mind are in the fake world portrayed in the movies. Reason #14 There are only 24 hours in a day and life passes very fast, with a lot that has to be accomplished. Make calculations of all the hours uselessly wasted watching movies. Reason #15 For those that only watch “clean movies”, be aware that your children are not as foolish as you are and when you are not home they become more then capable of defiling themselves. Remember the Sitra Acher is more then happy to supply them with ideas and make it very easy for them to carry them out. Basically it has partially been proven that every home with access to movies their children will watch impure movies and will Heaven Forbid be Pogem Habris. In addition there are times when a person is depressed and weak and if he has access to movies even if he normally only watches “good movies” he is much more likely to stumble. Also many trailers, commercials and previews have much impurity even if the actual movie has less. Reason #16 A person who watches movies will very soon catch himself using their vulgarity and phrases in his conversations. Remember what the Talmud says in Kesuves “A person who speaks vulgarity, even if he was to have 70 years of good fortune, it will now be changed to the opposite”. Reason #17 Rebbe Nachman teaches that the lowest part of the mind is the imagination. By watching movies a person greatly increases the imagination center of his mind until he becomes completely confounded. Reason #18 If a person places a cube of sugar or ice in a cup of water, it will dissolve slower then if it was crushed. This is because it has less surface area. It is the same way with a person when he commits a sin it mainly flaws the parts of his soul that are active at that moment. Normally most part of the soul are static and are not flawed that badly. However when watching a movie a person can become very excited due to the drama of the movie, many of his other emotions are also active and are thus uncovered. The damage entering at that moment can cause flows to parts of his souls that are normally covered. A person normally can not activate his emotions and need something big to happen to stimulate them and many times he is not doing anything wrong at that time. With a movie this can easily all happen at once.
Q: I need movies to relax A: How come you have tension during the rest of the day, especially while trying to study Torah or Pray? The reason is, your klipot are the ones causing the tension. Watching movies will only make it worse; instead do Tikkunim which will solve the problem.
A: First of all if you plan it out you can easily find other things to talk about. If you do become embarrassed in the process then that is a huge Tikkun and you should be happy that it happened. Q: I need to watch movies so I can know about the world A: That is not true, most information you gain is completely useless. Make a calculation of the last time any of it came into actual use. Also consider the fact that Hashem controls the world and things can go either way. Even if you were in an unlikely situation where this information can help you there will also be variables that it will not. If you got the information by doing something wrong it will likely not help you. Q: Why can I take only the good and leave out the bad. Even movies have some good. A: If you saw a piece of chicken laying in the street half covered in excrement would you just cut off that half and eat the other. A foolish person once clamed “I watch movies so I can be Maleh Nizozos”. The wise one replied “more likely to be Moried Tipos” Only a very big Tzadik can go into impurity and raise the sparks.
By watching movies a person is basically actively receiving his energy from the Sitra Acher. Proof of this is that a person could try everything to remove his tension and not succeed. However when a person sits down to watch a movie, he relaxes in a second. The reason is quite obvious that his tension stems from the demons created by his sins that are hovering around him there is obviously nothing he can do to appease them other then defile himself more.
